I've been listening to a great podcast called Sidebar Nation these days, since I'm running out of material with my regular podcasts.

It's very interesting, more about comics than anything else, but I'm a big fan of comics too (big surprise). They do interview a lot of great illustrators, there's an episode with James Gurney that you just have to listen.

And if you're a fan of comics or you're looking for an inside look, it's got plenty of useful info.

Sidebar Nation Podcast

Hola gente

He estado escuchando un podcast genial estos días llamado Sidebar Nation, ya que se me ha estado acabando el material de los podcast regulares que escucho mientras pinto.

Es bastante interesante, trata más acerca de comics que otras cosas, pero también soy un gran fan de los comics (gran sorpresa). También han entrevistado a grandes ilustradores, y tienen un capítulo con James Gurney que simplemente hay que escuchar.

ArtRage Tutorial – Canvas Positioner

The canvas positioner is a very useful tool when you're painting in ArtRage, you can pop it up by clicking the canvas icon on the menu on top.

With this tool you can zoom, rotate, or move the canvas, it's a good idea to have it showing all the time to save some time, though it can take some space on the program, so you'll need a decent sized monitor.

Rotating the canvas is one of the most important things you can do with this tool, you can find an angle you're comfortable painting with or look at your composition from different points of view. While we're on the subject, you can flip the look of your canvas horizontaly by pressing H or vertically by pressing V on the Keyboard, this isn't a feature of the canvas positioner tool, but I won't write another tutorial just about that.

Tutorial de ArtRage – Canvas Positioner

El posicionador de lienzo (canvas positioner) es una herramienta muy útil cuando se está pintando en ArtRage, se puede encontrar haciendo click en el ícono de lienzo ubicado en el menú superior.

Con esta herramienta se puede hacer zoom, rotar, o mover el lienzo, es una buena idea tenerla siempre en el escritorio para ahorrar algo de tiempo, aunque puede tomar algo de espacio en el mismo, por lo que se necesita un monitor con un tamaño decente.

Rotar el lienzo es quizás la función más importante que se puede hacer con esta herramienta, puedes encontrar un ángulo con el que estás cómodo para pintar, o mirar tu composición desde distintos puntos de vista. Mientras estamos en este tema, también se puede voltear el lienzo horizontalmente presionando H, o verticalmente presionando V en el teclado, esta no es una de las características de posicionador de lienzo, pero no escribiré otro tutorial solo acerca de eso.

It's been a while since the last post I made promoting The Circle of the Wilted Rose webcomic, but now there are exciting news.

Luf Creative Studios created a website for the comic at wiltedrose.lufcs.com to promote their new publishing system, where they update every monday, wednesday and friday instead of releasing a chapter every few weeks.

And while we're at it, Joyce's work really improved in the last pages, she took a whole new turn with the style and it's looking great.

Grayscale Conversion

Today I was having a chat with Jon Hodgson who pointed me to a website with different ways of converting an image to grayscale. I started experimenting with an image, and damn, it makes a BIG difference.

I especially liked methods that could be adjusted with the sliders in Photoshop, you can customize your result a lot. Other methods are more straightforward, but I think they're all better than a straight desaturation.

You can see in the image how different grayscales conversions look.

ArtRage Tutorial – Stencils

One of my favourite ArtRage tools is the stencil, if you know how to use them they can be a very powerful tool.

Although I don't normally use the standard stencils that ArtRage has, I've come up with a way of giving a little texture to my artwork by using stencils.

All you need is a good texture image, in black and white and with a very high contrast, then just bring the image as a stencil by going to Tools > Stencil Options > Select Stencil From Disk.

When you bring an image as a stencil the black part becomes transparent and the white is opaque, the grays become different levels of opacity. Now you just need to paint on top of the stencil, and the paint won't go through the opaque part of the it, leaving a distinct texture or shape, like in the next image.

The stencil can be inverted too, this is especially useful to put a higher contrast between the shapes or just using different colors without mixing them and ruining the texture.

Of course you can also rotate, flip, and scale the stencil too.

Una de mis herramientas favoritas de ArtRage son los stencils, si es que sabes como usarlos son una herramienta muy poderosa.

Aunque normalmente no uso los stencils estándar que tiene ArtRage, idee una manera de usarlos para darle un poco de textura a mis trabajos.

Todo lo que se necesita es una buena imagen de textura, en blanco y negro con un contraste muy alto, luego simplemente se trae la imagen como un stencil al ir a Tools > Stencil Options > Select Stencil From Disk.

Sai 101 – Controlling the Canvas

Some times when I draw I realize that the drawing is not right, the human figure may be unbalanced, etc. In this ocassions I put the paper against the light to see the mistakes.

In SAI, and in many other programs, you can do something similar, the superior bar on the program shows how you can control the image, as you can see on the next image.

The first thing you see is the selection ticket, to tell the truth I haven't found a difference with or without the ticket, I assumed that you can realize the actions according to what you have selected, but that's not it. Then we can see the zoom dialog, you can also zoom using the mouse or tablet scroll or with the zoom tool, so it's really not important.

What is worth it is the next dialog with degrees, this allows to rotate our view of the document, we can use the arrows in the bar or the supr and end keys on the keyboard. This is very useful when you want to draw straight lines, or if you have a figure laying down, just as you rotate the paper when you draw. My only complain about it is that you can only rotate in certain established degrees, in other softwares the rotation is very precise, however it doesn't need OpenGL like Photoshop to do it, which simplifies the whole thing.

Finally, you can see the mirror mode dialog, which obviously reflects the image, it has a box that shows if the image is normal or inverted.

This image shows how the same document can look when you mess with this options. It's important to mention that these tools only control how we view the document, so it doesn't really change it.

In other news

I've been switching to ArtRage, always looking for the more realistic look on my paintings, I still have a lot to learn, but I'm getting there.

The SAI 101 column is running out, I can still think of a couple of subjects I want to go over, but eventually I'll switch to ArtRage tutorials.

Curso Básico de SAI – Controlando el Lienzo

Algunas veces cuando he dibujado algo me doy cuenta de que no está derecho, de que la figura humana está desbalanceada, etc. En estas ocasiones pongo el papel contra la luz para ver los errores.

En SAI, y en muchos programas, se puede hacer algo similar, la barra superior que pueden ver en la siguiente imagen permite controlar como vemos el documento.

Compartiendo Tips los Jueves – Alchemy

Hace poco leyendo uno de los tantos blogs a los que estoy suscrito por RSS me topé con un programa que llamó mucho mi atención, se trata de Alchemy, y sirve para generar formas abstractas.

Es un programa muy entretenido que cuenta con diversas herramientas para dibujar y terminar con resultados muy interesantes, se puede dibujar en espejo, esconder el resultado, dibujar de acuerdo al sonido captado por el micrófono y muchas otras cosas, todo con el ánimo de crear formas y manchas que estimulen la creatividad del usuario.

Si se trabaja como artista de conceptos o si se encuentran sin una idea concreta para empezar sus trabajos, prueben este programa, de seguro hará que sus mentes se pongan a trabajar.

El programa está basado en Java, por lo que necesitarán tenerlo instalado para poder usarlo, una vez hecho eso pueden descargar Alchemy desde su página oficial: Al.chemy.org.

SAI 101 – Linework

Since the latest tutorial was the last one about brushs, it's time to move onto a new subject that involves different characteristics in SAI.

If you want to draw, ink or work the line in any way in SAI there's a completely new way to do this, different to the one we would use with the brushes, although you can use them too, but it's much easier to create a special line work layer, like the one in the right figure.

This is done by selecting the icon with the pen that's above the layers, and when you have one of this special layers you'll see that the tools change to the ones in the figure below.

We have now the following tools:

Pen / Eraser: To draw and erase the lines.

Weight: To change the weight of the line once it has been drawn.

Color: With this one we can change the color of the line.

Edit: To handle the points of the line (more on this later)

Pressure: Adjusts the pressure of the tablet

Select / Deselect: Self explanatory

Curva / Línea: Creates lines choosing the beggining and end points.

The most important thing, and what we'll see in this tutorial to avoid making it too long, is the difference between these tools and the ones in a normal layer, since we have two pens, what makes them different?, well, the linework layers are based in vectors.

Vectors are graphics based in geometric objects with mathematical values such as color, weight, etc. It may sound a little complicated, but there's no need to learn this, SAI will handle vectors very much like pixels, so it's not necessary to learn the theory. What you need to know is that, thanks to these values, the lines we draw can be edited afterwards, and because of this you can draw something with more precision and without the fear of making a mistake.

For example, if we take the pen, we can draw a line like this one

This doesn't look different from a line drawn by a normal tool, however, if we press the control key over the line, we'll see that is made of points.

These points are key places where you can take the line and edit it's shape, for example, if we keep pressing control, and drag the mouse from one of these points, we'll see how the point moves and the line changes according to this.

However, if we press shift, we can drag a whole sector of the line, generating a much more armonic change.

And if we don't want to have so many points, we can press alt and click on one of them to erase it, again the line will change to take it's new shape.

This is the basic about the linework layers, as you can see you can adjust the lines in a lot of ways after drawing them, this is their main characteristic.

In the next tutorial I'll write a little more about the same subject, that way this article is not too long and I have some material for the next one.

Curso Básico de SAI - Linework

Ya que el tutorial anterior fue el último que trató el tema de los pinceles, es hora de pasar a algo distinto y que involucra nuevas características de SAI.

Si se quiere dibujar, entintar, o trabajar la línea de cualquier manera en SAI, existe una forma totalmente, distinta a la que utilizariamos con los pinceles, aunque claro, esta se puede ocupar también, pero resulta mucho más cómodo crear una capa especial para líneas, como la de la figura de la derecha.

Esto se hace seleccionando el ícono con plumilla que se encuentra arriba de las capas, y al tener una de estas capas especiales verán que nuestras herramientas cambiarán a las que muestra la figura.

Aquí contamos entonces con las siguientes herramientas.

Pen / Eraser: Para dibujar y borrar líneas.

Weight: Sirve para cambiar el grosor de la línea una vez ya fue dibujada.

Color: Con esta podemos cambiar el color de la línea después de hacerla.

Edit: Para poder manejar los puntos de la línea (más acerca de esto después).

Pressure: Ajusta la presión del lapiz

Select / Deselect: Selecciona o deselecciona.

Curva / Línea: Crea líneas eligiendo el punto de inicio y el punto final.

Como mencioné en el último artículo, he estado participando en algunos concursos ya que no he recibido nuevas comisiones, hice dos piezas que me dejaron bastante feliz, y por supuesto, con la ayuda de Joyce.

Pueden empezar a ver algo de la influencia de Frazetta en estas.

I've been drawing and painting more than before these days, my workflow is usually higher when I have more commissions, but these days i don't have much work to do, so I decided to participate in some contest to improve my productivity.

These days I've noticed the different ways illustrators work in, I always compare my workflow to Joyce since I can watch her work very close, she always wanted to work on comics (and now she's working on one), since she's very fast at deawing and has an excellent understandment of human figure. On the other hand I can't draw as fast and I like to color every drawing, and I've always wanted to work as an illustrator.

It's hard for an artist to do everything good, one can always see the faults and use some tricks to “deceive” the spectator, there are those who are good at drawing landscapes, or designing characters, working on the human figure, mixing colors, etc. And I don't think there are many people that can do all these things. Since you never stop learning when you're an artist, the more years you have in the business the better you become, always practicing what's missing and polishing what's right.

However, nowadays there are different ways to do things, so I wanted to talk about a few of them.

Some tools to help you improve.

It's always good to look for tools that can make the work easier, here is a list of the ones I use.

Google Sketch Up it's a program that's being used by artists nowadays, it's a very simple 3D application perfect to use as a base for backgrounds, you can then improve it or just paint over it. I can almost assure that this program is being used in titles like Batman or Red Robin.

Kuler is a website by Adobe that collects different color sets, there are some spectacular combinations and they can give good ideas, you can also download them and use them in Adobe programs.
Posemaniacs is a great resource for those who have troubles with the human figure, not only does it have a million references, but it has exercises to improve the drawing.

Easy Paint Tool SAI is a program that you may be familiar with if you read this blog, it has a lot of options to paint but it can also help with the lineart with it's vector tools.

Mayang has an amazing number of textures to apply on your renders, be it that you work in 2D or 3D you'll find them useful, and they're in a good resolution too.

I personally love these ways of “cheating” maybe you'll curse me for this, but I think iof someone like Da Vinci lived in this times he would use this resources, after all he was recognized for inventing new ways of working and using the top technology of his times.

Los Caminos que Llevan a Roma

Estos días he estado dibujando y pintando más que antes, usualmente mi ritmo de trabajo aumenta cuando tengo más encargos, pero estos días no he tenido muchos, así que he decidido participar en algunos concursos para aumentar mi productividad.

En este tiempo me he dado cuenta de las distintas maneras de trabajar que tienen los ilustradores, siempre comparo mucho mi flujo de trabajo con el de Joyce ya que es a quien más puedo observar, ella siempre ha querido dedicarse a los comics (y ahora está participando en uno) ya que es muy rápida dibujando y tiene un excelente manejo de la figura humana. En cambio yo suelo demorarme algo más en dibujar pero me gustan las piezas más acabadas, y siempre he querido dedicarme a la ilustración.

Es difícil para un artista hacerlo todo bien, uno siempre puede ver falencias en su trabajo y usar trucos para “engañar” al espectador para que no se fijen en ellas, hay quienes son buenos para dibujar paisajes o diseñar personajes, trabajar en la figura humana, mezclar colores, etc. Y no creo que existan demasiadas personas que puedan hacer todas estas cosas bien. Como el dibujo es algo que nunca se deja de aprender, mientras más años se lleva en el oficio uno se vuelve mejor, siempre practicando lo que falta y puliendo lo que está bien.

Sin embargo hoy en día existen muchas formas de hacer las cosas, así que quería hablar acerca de algunas de ellas.

Herramientas que ayudan a mejorar.

Siempre es bueno buscar herramientas que puedan facilitar el trabajo, aquí tengo una lista de las que uso:

Google Sketch Up es un programa muy utilizado por dibujantes hoy en día, es una aplicación 3D muy simple que es perfecto como base para un fondo, luego este se puede pintar o mejorar. Es más, casi puedo asegurar que en títulos como Batman o Red Robin se utiliza este programa.

Kuler es un sitio de Adobe que tiene distintos set de combinaciones de colores, algunas combinaciones son espectaculares y pueden dar muy buenas ideas, además se pueden descargar y utilizar en las aplicaciones de Adobe.

Posemaniacs es un gran recurso para aquellos que tienen problemas con la figura humana, no solo presentan referentes sino que tienen ejercicios que se pueden hacer para mejorar el dibujo.

Easy Paint Tool SAI es un programa que ya conocerán si es que leen este blog, tiene muchas opciones para pintar pero también ayuda para entintar digitalmente con sus herramientas vectoriales.

Mayang tiene una cantidad de texturas increíbles para aplicar los render, ya sea que se trabaje en 2D o 3D pueden hacer uso de ellas, además están en muy buena resolución.

Sai 101 - Dilution

It's time to write something new in the SAI 101 article, and now is about the dilution of colors.

I've written before about blending vs opacity, but SAI has the option of diluting the colors too, and it works differently from the others. In this option, the colors are diluted similar to applying water to a watercolor, or medium to an oil, making the color more transparent before applying it on the canvas.

But then, ¿how's this any different from opacity?, well the dilution just works in a whole new way, here are some examples.

The first line represents opacity, then blending and finally dilution. As you can see, the three options are very different. Opacity will always multiply one color over the other, but blending mixes the color in a “real” way, while dilution applies the color already diluted, and mixes it very little, but you can see however how is affected by the color on the canvas.

What's interesting about this example is that the diluted brushstroke has a blending bar on 0 percent, if we imagine this is a real painting, it would mean applying a diluted color over an already dry canvas, where there would practically be no color mixture. In practice, dilution is used along with blending, and it just simbolizes the concentration of color we're going to apply, if the canvas was still fresh, the diluted colors would also blend better.

This image is the perfect example of the dilution and blending principle, it gives the impression of working with watercolors, huh?.

However, it's also important to explain that just like in the case of blending, in dilution is important where the brushstroke starts, the dilution won't act the same way if we start over one color or the other. Here is another example using the brushes in the first image.

You can notice how opacity is the only one not affected by this principle, this is because it doesn't correspond to any traditional painting principle.

Finally, in the case of working with just one color, dilution is the only tool that allows to manipulate it.

As you can see, obviously if we apply 10% red over 100% red, the result will be 100%, which is exactly what happens with opacity, if we also try to mix red with red, the result will be red, but if we dilute the color and mix it with the same color but more concentrated, you'll be able to affect the original color.

You can find the dilution bar just under the blending one, I usually dilute my colors 10% or 12%, but of course it varies according to what I need.

Curso Básico de Sai – Disolución

Hola

Hoy es hora de escribir algo nuevo en el Curso Básico de SAI, esta vez se trata de la disolución del pintado.

Ya antes había escrito sobre la mezcla de colores contra la opacidad, pero SAI presenta una opción más, que es la de diluir los colores, y que actua de una manera diferente a los otros. En esta opción los colores se diluyen como al aplicar agua en una acuarela o medium en los oleos, volviéndose más transparentes antes de aplicarlos en el lienzo.

Pero entonces ¿qué tan diferente es esto de la opacidad?, pues simplemente la disolución actua de una manera distinta, acá hay unos ejemplos.

La primera línea que ven es la de opacidad, luego la de mezcla y finalmente la de disolución. Como pueden ver, las tres actuan de una manera muy distinta. Opacidad siempre se multiplicará sobre el color anterior, la mezcla en cambio mezcla los colores de manera “real”, mientras que la disolución aplica el color ya diluido y se mezcla muy poco, pero si se alcanza a ver afectada por el color anterior.

Lo interesante de este ejemplo es que el pincel con disolución tiene la barra de mezcla puesta en 0, si imaginamos que este es un cuadro físico, significaría aplicar una capa de un color diluido sobre un lienzo ya seco, donde practicamente no habría mezcla de colores, en la práctica la disolución se usa junto con la mezcla, y tan solo simboliza la concentración de color que vamos a aplicar, si el lienzo estuviera todavía fresco, los colores disueltos también se mezclarían mejor.

Esta imagen ejemplifica perfectamente el principio de disolución y mezcla, da la impresión de estar trabajando con acuarelas ¿no?.

También hay que explicar que como en el caso de la mezcla de colores es importante donde empieza la pincelada, la disolución no siempre actuará de la misma manera si empieza sobre un color o sobre nada. Acá hay otro ejemplo utilizando los pinceles de la primera imagen.

Nótese como la opacidad es la única no afectada por este principio, puesto que no corresponde a un principio de pintado tradicional.

Finalmente, en el caso de trabajar con un solo color, la disolución es la única herramienta que permite realmente manipularlo.

Como pueden ver, obviamente si aplicamos 10% de un color sobre 100% el resultado va a ser 100%, que es lo que pasa con la opacidad, si es que también intentamos mezclar rojo con rojo, el resultado va a ser rojo, pero si diluimos el color y lo mezclamos con el mismo pero más concentrado, si se logrará afectar el color original.

Pueden encontrar la barra de disolución justo debajo de la de mezcla, usualmente yo diluyo mis colores en un 10% o 12%, claro que varía dependiendo de lo que necesito.

Hi everyone!

As I mentioned before, I've been very busy working at the International Book Fair these days, it's been very entertaining but also very tiring, and between all the stuff I had to do on thursday, I didn't have the time to sit down and write the column, I hope you can forgive that.

Now that I have the time, I can write the new Sharing Tips Thursday (or Monday in this case) today, collaborations.

For a long time I've been working with Joyce in many of our projects, when I was little I always liked watercolors, so I started painting and specialized in coloring, while Joyce really liked comics, so she started drawing much more than me. It was natural then that when this super studio was formed she handled lineart and I did the paintings.

I think is hard for an artist to be good at absolutely everything, while there are some genius around and we're still relatively young, collaborations help us create better pieces when done correctly, we also can learn from each other's mitakes and criticize our work, there's a lot of room for growth in collaborations.

But there are also some troubles with collaborations:

You can stop working on the problems you have if you count on someone to work on them for you.

Professionally the money is divided in two, so not only the quality has to be twice as good, you must also work twice as fast.

There will always be different artistic views, which can generate discussions or troubles at work.

It's important to keep working in your faults to improve, but I also always remember a phrase from the movie “Mimi wo Sumaseba” by Studio Ghibli there isn't only one way to live life, there are all kind of artists and ways to do things, there are those who draw in the computer, those who draw traditionally and those who start their pieces with stains; there are traditional artists, digital and a mix of both, there are all sorts of ways to improve and do things, the important thing is not only to learn, but to have fun in the process and find your own way to do things.

This thursday I'll write the SAI column for those interested, there are still a few details about SAI I have to write about but the tutorials needed to create a complete brush are close to finish.

Colaboraciones

¡Hola a todos!

Como ya he mencionado, he estado ocupado trabajando en la Feria Internacional del Libro estos días, ha sido bastante entretenido pero muy cansador también, y entre todas las cosas que tuve que hacer, el Jueves no tuve el tiempo suficiente para sentarme y escribir la columna, espero puedan disculparme por ello.

Como no hay plazo que no se cumpla, hoy escribo la nueva entrega de Compartiendo Tips los Jueves (o los lunes en este caso), las colaboraciones.

Desde hace tiempo que vengo trabajando con Joyce en muchos de nuestros proyectos, desde chico siempre me habían llamado la atención las acuarelas, así que empecé a pintar y me especialicé en colorear, mientras que a Joyce le gustaban mucho los comics, y por ende dibujaba bastante más que yo. Era natural entonces que al hacer nuestro super estudio ella se encargara de dibujar y yo de pintar.

Creo que es difícil para un artista ser bueno en absolutamente todo, si bien existen aquellos genios y todavía somos relativamente jóvenes, las colaboraciones ayudan a crear mejores piezas cuando se hacen correctamente, además se aprende el uno de otro y se critican los trabajos, existe mucha oportunidad para crecimiento en las colaboraciones.

Pero también existen algunos problemas en las colaboraciones:

Se puede tender a no trabajar en los problemas que uno tiene si es que el otro los puede realizar.

Profesionalmente, el dinero se divide en dos, así que no solo la calidad tiene que ser el doble de buena, sino que se tiene que trabajar el doble de rápido.

Siempre existirán diferentes visiones artísticas, lo que puede generar discusiones o problemas en el trabajo.

Por un tiempo ya he estado leyendo acerca de la influencia de Frazzeta en la industria, y aunque estaba algo familiarizado con sus trabajos, he de decir que no conocía realmente su arte.

Pero, después de ser invadido por su presencia, simplemente tuve que comprar algunos de sus libros, ¡esperen ver algunos cambios en mis ilustraciones!.

SAI 101 – Textures

Although I mentioned the use of textures in another column, and I explained a little how you use them in SAI, it seemed like a good idea to write a more complete article about the subject, since they're essential to create a good brush.

First, the specifics of the files:

The images must be square and sizes in 2 exponential. Like 128, 256, 512, etc. I use 512 x 512 textures because they allow for a better amount of detail.

They must be BMP files.

The colors must be indexed (Color mode index).

They go in the blotmap, brushtext and papertext folders.

The textures must be tileable.

Actually that last point is not absolutely necessary, while if one of the others fail the texture just won't work, but it's important to have it in mind because of the way SAI uses the textures in the brushes.

When using these textures, SAI tiles the image in the canvas, so if the texture is not tileable, the corners will look weird and generate visible squares in the illustration.

Although this example is not perfect, you can see how the image is tileable.

These images go in the brushtext folder, and just like the elemaps you can change the opacity of the texture in the box on the right.

Bear in mind that the texture's opacity variation can be hard to control, the pen pressure also influences the look.

Here's an example of the brush with textures at diferent opacities.

On the other hand, textures can also be used to shape a pencil just like an elemap, those files go in the blotmap folder and they're very useful to create irregular brushes, ideal for special effects on the ilustration. You can select this option on the brush form box.

Other textures can go on the papertext folder, these are used to lay the image over the whole document, like the paper itselft was made of this material, this option can be interesting, but to tell the truth, I haven't experimented much with it.

Textures are essential to make the painting look less digital and artificial, they can give expression to the illustrations and help denote the material of the objects.

Curso Básico de SAI – Texturas

Aunque ya había mencionado antes el uso de texturas en otra columna, y expliqué un poco como se utilizan en SAI, me pareció buena idea profundizar en el tema, ya que son esenciales al crear un buen pincel.

Primero las especificaciones técnicas de las imágenes:

Deben ser cuadradas y crecer exponencialmente de 2 en 2, es decir 128, 256, 512, etc. Yo hago mis texturas de 512 x 512 porque permite la cantidad suficiente de detalles.

Se guardan en archivos BMP.

Los colores deben ser indexados (Modo de color index).

Se ponen en las carpetas blotmap, brushtext y papertext.

Deben ser repetibles.

La otra noche me sentía algo desanimada. Queria empezar una ilustración, pero no tenia muchas ideas y, además, me sentía bastante cansada. Sin embargo, tenia ganas de dibujar, y decidí aprovecharlas de todas formas, Tome mi caja de marcadores de colores y comencé a hacer rayas.

Creí que sería un buen ejercicio intentar dibujar utilizando pocas líneas, ya que usualmente me demoro mucho al bocetear porque utilizo demasiadas rayas (realmente creo que soy la unica persona en el mundo que podría ver alguna figura en mis bocetos). Y funcionó!. logre hacer figuras humanas básicas en muy poco tiempo, y además, pase un muy buen rato.

Creo que el ejercicio me ayudo a soltar el trazo y a estructurar mejor.

For some reason I feel like I wrote the last article of this column a century ago, a lot has happened these weeks, and some of those things are pushing me to write about this subject.

In the past I wrote about how to create your own style and the importance of experimenting in order to achieve this, but I failed to mention that is also essential to keep a level of consistency in your work.

When you work as a professional illustrator you can't keep jumping between styles all the time, art directors look for a clear direction in your line of work, and that all the pieces have approximately the same level and tecniques. This is obviously because they don't want to hire an illustrator and be wondering what kind of artwork will be delivered.

But there are a lot of illustrators that handle different styles, and there are those who can adapt their work to what the client is asking for, and show a variety of pieces in their portfolios. This is all very good if the illustrations clearly have different styles, like semi-realistic, funny, cartoony, etc. As long as you can tell there's a control over the tecnique that allows to do all that, and it's not just the artist trying different things.

This may make my previous advice about experimenting look bad, but it's not that it can't be done, you just have to be careful:

If it's a professional job, it's better to take small steps than to change everything all of the sudden.

If you want to show the piece in your portfolio, make sure that it has a style that's different enough from the rest and is not just a change of tecniques.

If you want to do something very risky, if probably best to try it on a personal piece, it may even result in a failed experiment.

That way you can keep a certain level of professionalism and consistency in your work while at the same time level up by trying different things, the idea is to eventually find a style that you're comfortable with, or a lot of them, and keep it. Then you can just eternally improve in other aspects such as lighting, color, human figure, etc.

This way your portfolio will be more attractive to future clients / employers, if you're looking to pursue a job in the industry.

Consistencia

Por alguna razón siento como si hubiera escrito el artículo anterior de esta columna hace como un siglo, han pasado hartas cosas estas semanas, y algunas de ellas me empujan a escribir este tema.

En el pasado escribí acerca de como crear un estilo propio y lo importante que es experimentar para hacerlo, sin embargo hay que mencionar también que es esencial mantener un nivel de consistencia en los trabajos.

Cuando se trabaja profesionalmente como ilustrador, no se pueden dar saltos de estilo todo el tiempo, los directores de arte buscan que tu línea de trabajo tenga una dirección clara, y que todas las piezas tengan el mismo nivel y técnica aproximadamente. Esto es obviamente porque no quieren contratar a un ilustrador y no saber con que tipo de ilustración va a salir.

Por supuesto hay muchos ilustradores que manejan diversos estilos, y hay otros que pueden adaptarse a lo que piden, y muestran una variedad de piezas en sus portafolios. Eso está muy bien si es que las ilustraciones tienen claramente estilos distintos, como semi-realista, divertido, fantástico, cartoon, etc. Mientras se note claramente que hay un manejo de la técnica tal que permite abarcar todo eso, y no que simplemente se están probando distintas cosas.

Esto quizás deja mal al consejo anterior de experimentar, pero no es que no pueda ser hecho, tan solo hay que tener cuidado:

Si se trata de un trabajo profesional, es mejor dar pequeños pasos que cambiar todo repentinamente.

En caso de querer mostrar la pieza en un portafolio, asegurarse de que tiene un estilo suficientemente distinto a las demás y no es solo un cambio de técnica.

Si se quiere hacer algo muy arriesgado, es mejor dejarlo como una pieza personal, incluso podría resultar como un experimento fallido.

Así se puede mantener cierto nivel de profesionalismo y consistencia en el trabajo mientras al mismo tiempo se sube de nivel probando diversas cosas, la idea de esto es eventualmente encontrar un estilo con el que se esté cómodo, o varios de ellos, y quedarse con él. Luego se puede mejorar eternamente en otros aspectos como iluminación, color, manejo de la figura humana, etc.

De esta forma el portafolio será más atractivo para sus futuros clientes / empleadores, si es que buscan perseguir una carrera en el mundo de la ilustración.
