For a while now I've been placing some post-it on my pc's tower to remind myself of various things, and the mayority of those post-it are advices I've been giving myself to have in mind while painting, since I can consult the post it just by turning my head.

This list of tips started growing and it's taking most of my computer, among other things I've written, and it'll soon start taking over my wall as well, so I just decided to let it take over Banana Orange's Blog too.

I'm not planning on sharing tutorials of my work in this column (although I might do that in the future if someone asks me, but it'll be on another column perhaps), but I do want to talk about less technical and more elusive subjects, I think my experience can be of use to other artists.

After all, most of what we learn in this business is based simply on experience, through trial and error, but to lean we have to try different things, which leads me to my first tip.

Experiment

I think experimenting in different ways is essencial for an artist, and someone who's beggining has more time to do so without worrying about what clients might say or even if it'll turn out well, more important than the result is the experience that the experiment gives.

Not so long ago I sent an email to Heather Hudson and I found very interesting something she wrote:

"A tool is only a tool, not a technique, as people used to say about airbrush. But young artists get to experiment with a lot of tools before they settle down..."

With illustration you can experiment with color, shapes, tools and other things, through these experiences one can evolve as an illustrator and eventually find his own style.

Every two thursdays I'll share some of the experiments I've tried and the results I've had with them.

Experimentar

Desde hace un tiempo he estado pegando post it en la torre de mi computador para recordar algunas cosas, y de esos post it la mayoría son consejos que me he dado a mi mismo para tenerlos en cuenta pintando, ya que puedo consultar el post it con solo mirar al lado.

Esa lista de tips fue creciendo y ahora está tomando casi todo el computador, junto con otras cosas, y pronto se empezará a apoderar de mi pared, así que decidí que se apoderara del blog de Banana Orange también.

No planeo compartir tutoriales de lo que hago en esta columna (aunque tal vez lo haga en un futuro si es que me lo piden, pero será en otra instancia), sino que más bien quiero hablar de temas menos técnicos y más elusivos, pienso que mi experiencia puede ser de utilidad a otros artistas.

Después de todo, mucho de lo que aprendemos en este oficio lo hacemos simplemente por experiencia, a través de prueba y error, pero para eso hay que probar distintas cosas, lo que me lleva a mi primer tip.

Experimentar

Creo que experimentar de distintas formas es esencial para un artista, y alguien que está empezando tiene más tiempo para hacerlo sin preocuparse de lo que dirán los clientes o incluso si quedará bien, más importante que el resultado es la experiencia que el experimento otorga.

Hace poco envié un e-mail a Heather Hudson y encontré muy interesante algo que escribió:

“Una herramienta es solo una herramienta, no una técnica, como la gente solía decir acerca del aerógrafo. Pero los artistas jóvenes pueden experimentar con muchas herramientas antes de conformarse con una...”


En la ilustración se puede experimentar con el color, formas, herramientas y otras cosas, a través de estas experiencias uno se puede desarrollar como ilustrador y eventualmente encontrar su propio estilo.

Cada dos jueves compartiré algunos de los experimentos que he intentado y los resultados que he tenido.
