Sorry for the late article today, these last days I haven't felt like sitting in front of the computer on the afternoons with the heat here in Santiago.

Ironically today's column is about how we don't listen to the critique or some advices (ironically because this is a column about advices), most of these times, it's because of the pride that we have on what we do, but other times I think it's simply because we're not ready to see what they're telling us.

I think you can't learn something until you really understand it, you can perhaps imitate it, or you'll try to do it just because you were told to, but these things won't stick until they make that click in your head that happens when you can finally see something that was in front of our eyes this whole time.

It's nice when this happens, a couple of days ago it happened to me with the way I hold the pencil, I've always held the pencil in a weird way, and I usually rest my hand in the paper, but at that time I thought “drawing without touching the paper will give me more freedom”, and it really worked, because I understood it, and wow I heard that phrase a lot of times before.

This doesn't mean that we shouldn't listen to critique or advices, on the contrary, it's good to hear them, and if you can internalize them to provoque that enlightening moment on purpose, even better, but you gotta know that if the changes are artificial they won't last long, and you'll be able to apply what you learned only when you're ready.

Cuando estés Listo

Disculpen la tardanza en el artículo de hoy, estos últimos días no dan muchas ganas de sentarse frente al computador en las tardes con el calor que está haciendo en Santiago.

Irónicamente la columna de hoy trata de como muchas veces no hacemos caso a la crítica o a los consejos (ironicamente porque esta es una columna de consejos), muchas de esas veces, es por el orgullo que tiene cada uno de lo que hace, pero otras veces creo que es simplemente porque no estamos listos para ver lo que nos están diciendo.

Creo que uno no aprenderá algo hasta que realmente lo comprenda, puede imitarlo quizás, o puede intentar hacerlo solo porque se lo dijeron, pero nada de esto se quedará hasta que llegue ese click en la cabeza que nos pasa cuando finalmente podemos ver algo que estuvo frente a nuestros ojos todo este tiempo.

Es simpático cuando eso pasa, hace poco me pasó con la manera de tomar el lapiz, siempre lo he tomado muy extraño y suelo apoyar la mano en el papel, pero en un momento pensé “levantar la mano me dará más soltura de trazo”, y realmente funcionó, porque lo comprendí, y vaya que había escuchado esa frase antes.

Esto no significa que debamos hacer oidos sordos a la crítica o consejos, al contrario, es muy bueno escucharlos, y si es que se pueden interiorizar para provocar ese momento de iluminación a propósito, aún mejor, pero hay que saber que los cambios artificiales no duran mucho, y que uno podrá aplicar lo que aprendió solo cuando esté listo.
