Look at a Book a Hundred Times

A little while ago I realized that I tend to check my artbooks over and over again, whenever I take a little break I grab a book to pass the time, and of course to try to see if I can get some dark secret about the author's tecnique.

I don't know if that has happened, but I do think that every time I see a book I can observe something different, it's very similar to what happens in the movies, when you watch one for the first time you put so much attention to the plot that you miss some of de details, but every time you watch it again you see something new.

It's a very entertaining exercise to make, when I look at an image in different occasions I've ended up observing how a cloud is resolved, or how are the textures of the floor managed, things you usually don't put attention to but that are as important as the main figure, whichever it is.

If you mix this with the exercise of copying the tecniques of an illustration, which allows to understand its content in a much deeper way, you can learn more from an author or its pieces, which is the whole point of looking at a reference.

Mirar un Libro Cien Veces

Hace poco me di cuenta de que suelo revisar los libros de arte que tengo hasta el cansancio, siempre que tengo un pequeño descanso tomo alguno para entretenerme mirandolo, además de tratar de descifrar algún oscuro secreto sobre la técnica del artista.

No se si lo último ha pasado, pero si creo que cada vez que veo un libro puedo observar algo distinto, es muy parecido a lo que pasa en las películas, cuando uno ve una por primera vez está tan absorto en la trama que no se fija en los detalles, pero cada vez que la ve de nuevo se fija en algo distinto.

Es un ejercicio bastante entretenido de hacer, al observar una imagen en distintas ocasiones me he terminado fijando en como se resuelve una nube, o como son las texturas del piso, cosas que uno usualmente pasa por alto pero que son igualmente importantes que la figura central, sea la que sea.

Si es que además de esto se hace el ejercicio de copiar las técnicas de alguna ilustración, cosa que permite una interiorización del contenido mucho más profunda que la simple observación, se puede llegar a aprender mejor de un autor o su obra, que es lo que se busca al ver referentes.
