SAI 101 – Color Pickers

Saltar al español

SAI comes with a lot of color pickers, although the truth is that you won't need any other than the one that comes by default, which is a square with a circle around it that represents the tones.

This square represents the HSV or HSB color mode, which stants for Hue, Saturation and Value or Brightness (which is the same thing). It's a color space based on the way the human being perceives color.

A lot of times a triangle is used instead of a square, this way each corner represents a variable of the model, in contrast, the corners of the square represent a mix of variables. This has it's advantages and disadvantages, maybe it's a bit harder to know the values that you're working with, if that becomes necessary, but having more space makes it easier to select the colors.

The advantages of using this representation over others are plenty, first of all it doesn't define primary and secondary colors, which is a useful clasification for learning, but it's just that, a clasification, there are no colors that are more important than others, contrary to what one may think when learning to paint or use color spaces.

On the other hand it's very difficult to use RGB sliders in order to select colors,

and while a CMYK space is easier, instead of mixing light or pigments, with this representation of the HSV model you can pick the exact color you want.

Finally the color wheel shows the complementary colors by placing them on the contrary side of the circle, this makes its identification easier.

The next image shows the different color mdels included in SAI, when selecting the colors in one space the sliders move on the others.

Edit: Thanks to DarlingMionette who pointed out I was wrong about the last color picker, it's a gradient mixer, that's what's nice about having people commenting.

What you have marked as grayscale.. isn't actually a grayscale slider.. it's a color mixer.. you put one color in the box on one side, another in the other side, and it creates a gradient mix of the two.
