SAI 101 – Creating Brushes

Continuing with this collection of SAI mini tutorials, I'll write about another one of my favourite characteristics of the program, the creation of brushes.

I think in almost every painting program you can create brushes, it's certainly very easy to do something basic in Photoshop, you make a stain, select it, and then go to Edit > Define Brush Preset. But there's something about SAI that I liked a lot, how simple and complete it is to create a brush with an elemap.

The thing about this image that comes with SAI as the file elemap-empty.psd in the do-it-yourselft folder is that it defines the most important aspects about a brush, the shape and bristles it has. The circle represents the area where you can draw the brush, and the cross is just a guide.



For example, I made this pencil named flat3, you can see it zoomed in on the image, I did it because I wasn't happy with the flat brushes that came with SAI, I considered them more round than I liked. In this brush, and every brush for that matter, the black pixels represent a bristle, well, not excactly, because the brush wouldn't have enough bristles, but it's what it represents anyway.

By creating a brush this way you can define the shape first, and then the space between the bristled, that way you can make the brush stroke more or less evident when you paint, which also can be regulated by playing with the density of the brush in the box.

This is an example of the same brush with different densities.

Although there's not much of a different between 100% and 75%, you can appreciate how the brush changes according to the density, this combined with the use of textures, that I'll explain in the next tutorial, can create very interestign brushes.

Don't forget to save your brushes in the elemap folder and then open sai with the start-sai.exe file so that it recognizes the changes.

I'll leave my favourite brush in it's original size so you can use it.

Curso Básico de SAI – Como Crear Pinceles

Continuando con esta colección de mini tutoriales de SAI, seguiré con otra de mis características favoritas del programa, la creación de pinceles.

Creo que en casi todos los programas de pintado se pueden crear pinceles, ciertamente en photoshop es bastante fácil hacer algo básico, se hace una mancha, se selecciona y luego se pone Editar > Definir Píncel. Pero hay algo en SAI que me gustó mucho, lo simple y completo que resulta hacer un pincel con un elemap.

La gracia de esta imagen que viene en SAI como el archivo elemap-empty.psd en la carpeta do-it-yourself es que se define lo más importante de un pincel, la forma y los pelos que tiene. El círculo representa el área donde se puede dibujar el pincel, y la cruz es para guiarse.



Por ejemplo, yo hice este pincel que denominé flat3, y que en la imagen se puede ver con un zoom in, lo hice porque no me contentaba con los pinceles planos con que venía SAI, los consideraba más redondos de lo que quería. En este pincel cada pixel negro es considerado un pelo, bueno, no es que en realidad sea exactamente así, porque el pincel tendría muy pocos pelos, pero es más o menos lo que se representa.

Haciendo un pincel así se puede definir la forma en primera instancia, y luego cuanto espacio hay entre los pelos, así se puede marcar más o menos la brocha al pintar, lo que además se puede regular variando la densidad del pincel en la caja de la derecha.

Este es un ejemplo del mismo píncel con distintas densidades.

Aunque no hay mucha diferencia entre el 100% y 75%, si se puede apreciar como cambia el pincel según la densidad, esto en combinación con el uso de texturas, que explicaré en el siguiente tutorial, puede lograr pinceles muy interesantes.

No olviden guardar sus pinceles en la carpeta elemap y luego abrir sai con el start-sai.exe para que los reconozca.
